Vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin essential for blood clotting, bone health, and cardiovascular function. It plays a key role in helping the body use calcium properly, directing it to where itβs needed (bones and teeth) and keeping it away from where it shouldnβt build up (arteries and soft tissues).
There are two main forms of Vitamin K:
- Vitamin K1 (phylloquinone): Found in leafy green vegetables, primarily supports blood clotting.
- Vitamin K2 (menaquinone): Found in fermented foods and animal products, supports calcium regulation, bone mineralisation, and arterial health.
Vitamin K2 comes in several subtypes with MK-7 (menaquinone-7) being the most bioavailable and long-lasting form. It stays in the body longer than other subtypes, making it more effective at delivering consistent benefits.
Modern diets are often low in Vitamin K2, especially if you eat very little dairy or fermented food.
Supplementing with K2 MK-7 may help:
- Support bone density by activating osteocalcin, a protein that binds calcium to bones and teeth
- Protect cardiovascular health by helping activate matrix GLA protein (MGP), which prevents calcium from depositing in arteries
- Work synergistically with vitamin D3 by helping shuttle calcium to the most beneficial areas of the body
