🌿 African Dream Seeds — Entada rheedii
Giant Sea Bean | Tropical Climbing Vine | For Horticultural Growing Only
Entada rheedii, known as the African Dream Bean or giant sea bean, is a large tropical liana from coastal forests of Africa, Asia and Australia. It produces some of the longest seed pods in the plant kingdom and large, glossy, chestnut‑brown seeds — buoyant enough to drift across oceans. In cultivation it forms a vigorous woody climber with feathery leaves and spikes of small cream flowers.
These whole seeds have no coating or seed treatment and are intended exclusively for horticultural cultivation, botanical study, and educational use.
🌱 Growing Guide
These are general horticultural guidelines — not instructions for ingestion or processing.
🔧 Seed Preparation
-
Scarification — The seed coat is very hard. File or nick a small area on the edge, away from the hilum (seed scar), until the paler inner layer just shows.
-
Soak — Soak in warm water for 24–48 hours, changing the water daily, until the seed swells.
🌿 Sowing
-
Medium — A free‑draining mix of seed compost with perlite or horticultural sand.
-
Depth — Sow on its side about 2–3 cm deep in a deep pot.
-
Temperature — Keep warm at 25–30°C; a heated propagator is ideal. Germination can take 2–8 weeks.
-
Moisture — Keep lightly moist, never waterlogged, to avoid rot.
☀️ Growing On
-
Light — Bright light, with full sun once established.
-
Support — A fast, heavy climber; provide a strong trellis, wires or pergola.
-
Temperature — Frost‑tender; grow in a heated greenhouse or conservatory with a minimum of around 12°C.
-
Feeding — A balanced liquid feed every 3–4 weeks during spring and summer.
