Who it is for

  • Adults and children over 6 with a sore, painful or irritated mouth or throat.
  • People who want a sugar-free lozenge (sweetened with isomalt) with an anti-inflammatory action rather than a simple demulcent sweet.

Not suitable for: Anyone allergic to benzydamine or any of the other ingredients; anyone allergic to salicylic acid (aspirin) or other NSAID painkillers such as ibuprofen; children under 6 years; women who are breastfeeding. Do not use in pregnancy unless your doctor advises it. Talk to a doctor or pharmacist first if you have been told you have an intolerance to some sugars (the lozenges contain isomalt).

How to use

  1. Read the label and Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) before use.
  2. Adults and children over 6 years: one lozenge 3 times a day.
  3. Let the lozenge dissolve slowly in the mouth. Do not swallow it whole and do not chew it.
  4. Children aged 6 to 11 should take the lozenges under adult supervision.
  5. Do not use for more than 7 days. If your throat gets worse, does not improve, or you develop a fever or other symptoms, speak to a pharmacist or doctor.

Frequently asked questions

How many Difflam lozenges can I take a day?

One lozenge three times a day. Do not take more than this.

Can children have them?

Children over 6 years can, under adult supervision for ages 6 to 11. They must not be given to children under 6.

How long can I use them for?

Up to 7 days. See a pharmacist or doctor if your symptoms have not improved or get worse, or if a fever develops.

Can I take them if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

Do not use them while breastfeeding. In pregnancy use them only if your doctor says it is clearly necessary, at the lowest dose for the shortest time.

Are they sugar free?

Yes. They are sweetened with isomalt (E953) and acesulfame potassium. Isomalt may be unsuitable if you have an intolerance to some sugars.

What side effects can they cause?

Uncommonly, a burning sensation or dryness in the mouth, or increased sensitivity of the skin to sunlight. Allergic reactions are rare but can be serious; stop use and get medical help at once if you have sudden swelling of the mouth or throat, difficulty breathing, rash or itching.

Safety and storage

  • Contains sunset yellow (E110) and quinoline yellow (E104), which may cause allergic reactions, and flavouring components (citral, citronellol, d-limonene, geraniol, linalool) that may cause allergic reactions.
  • If you take too many lozenges, contact a pharmacist, doctor or hospital immediately and take the pack with you.
  • Do not store above 30°C. Store in the original package to protect from moisture. Do not use after the expiry date.
  • Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
  • Read the PIL. Report suspected side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.
