A loose-leaf herbal infusion combining lemon balm, chamomile, tulsi, vervain and rose petals.

Soothing the Nervous System & Easing Tension Headaches

When the human body encounters psychological stress, the autonomic nervous system and hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis activate the stress response, increasing the release of stress mediators such as adrenaline and cortisol. This response can produce physical effects including increased muscle tension, particularly around the neck, shoulders and scalp, alongside changes in pain sensitivity. In susceptible individuals, these effects may contribute to the development or worsening of tension-type headaches.

In traditional Western herbal medicine, nervines are used to support the nervous system and help ease states of nervous tension, restlessness and stress-related muscular tension. Calming nervines are traditionally selected to promote relaxation and support a more settled autonomic response during periods of psychological or physical stress.

Melissa officinalis (Lemon Balm) is traditionally used as a calming nervine to support the nervous system during periods of stress and nervous tension. Its phytochemical constituents influence several neurological signalling pathways, including GABAergic pathways, which contribute to its calming effects. Human studies using specific lemon balm preparations have reported improvements in measures of calmness and stress, although effects on cognition appear to vary according to the extract and dose. By helping to promote a calmer state, Lemon Balm may be particularly useful when stress is accompanied by feelings of nervous tension, restlessness or irritability.

Matricaria chamomilla (Chamomile) supports this action through its calming and antispasmodic properties. Chamomile supports  relaxation through central nervous-system pathways, while its constituents have also demonstrated antispasmodic effects on smooth muscle, particularly within the gastrointestinal tract. This combination makes it especially useful when nervous tension is accompanied by physical manifestations such as digestive cramping, abdominal tension or stress-related gastrointestinal discomfort.

Building Stress Resilience & Clearing Cognitive Fog

Prolonged exposure to demanding or stressful environments can contribute to mental fatigue and reduced cognitive performance, sometimes experienced as difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness, or ‘brain fog. To combat this, herbal medicine looks to adaptogenic botanicals, which help regulate physiological functions during times of increased pressure.

Ocimum sanctum (Tulsi / Holy Basil) is a highly valued adaptogen that supports metabolic and cognitive function. Tulsi helps the body adapt to physiological and psychological stress, while supporting healthy cognitive function through antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and stress-modulating mechanisms. By gently encouraging blood flow and helping to stabilize mood, it eases mental sluggishness and brain fog, providing a sustained sense of calm, steady energy.

Verbena officinalis (Vervain) provides additional support as a grounding nervous system tonic. Its natural bitter properties serve a dual purpose: they cool heat associated with irritation and restlessness, while gently stimulating digestive secretions to ensure the body efficiently absorbs nutrients during demanding times.

Whole Rosa (Rosa) petals complete the blend, offering a cooling, astringent quality that comforts sensitive mucosa linings and helps soothe acidity, which may occur during times of heightened stress.

Clinical Validation & Scientific Studies

At Zen Maitri, our traditional formulations are continually reviewed alongside modern research to ensure our functional blends meet the highest standards of contemporary wellness. Below are the key peer-reviewed clinical studies supporting the traditional applications of the core botanicals found in this blend:

Cognitive Enhancement & Stress Reduction (Melissa officinalis): Human clinical research suggests that lemon balm can influence mood and cognitive performance, with acute administration associated with increased calmness and, at certain doses, improved accuracy of attention.

Adaptogenic & Anxiolytic Actions (Ocimum sanctum): Clinical research suggests that Tulsi can support the body’s response to psychological stress. In a placebo-controlled human trial, supplementation was associated with reduced perceived stress and a moderated physiological stress response, including lower cortisol, salivary α-amylase and blood-pressure responses to an acute stressor.

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial investigating the effects of an Ocimum tenuiflorum (Holy Basil) extract on stress, mood, and sleep in adults experiencing stress. Frontiers in Nutrition, 9, 965130.

Nervous System Regulation & Muscle Relaxation (Matricaria chamomilla): Clinical research suggests that Chamomile may help reduce symptoms of mild-to-moderate generalized anxiety. Preclinical research indicates that constituents such as apigenin may influence GABA-related signalling pathways involved in relaxation and the stress response.
