How to use

  • For external use only. Read the label and supplied patient leaflet; follow your doctor or pharmacist’s instructions.
  • The amount depends on the area: apply a 5–15cm length of gel as a thin layer at one time, up to four times daily. This is a length, not a volume in millilitres.
  • If the area is tender, apply around it. Wash hands afterwards unless treating the hands.
  • Do not exceed the advised amount. See a doctor if the condition does not improve or worsens.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hirudoid Gel the same as heparinoid cream?

No. This product is Hirudoid Gel 0.3% w/w in a 50g tube. Gel and cream are different formulations; check the exact pack and directions.

What is Hirudoid Gel used for?

It is a topical medicine for superficial thrombophlebitis and for soothing superficial bruises and haematomas. It is not a general treatment for acne scars or a substitute for assessment of a suspected deep blood clot.

What does 5–15cm mean in the instructions?

It is the length of gel squeezed from the tube for one application, not a volume in millilitres. Apply as a thin layer, up to four times daily, according to the leaflet.

Can children use Hirudoid Gel?

Do not use in children under five. Check the leaflet and ask a pharmacist whether it is suitable for the child.
