About Varenicline
What is Varenicline (Champix®)?
Varenicline is a stop-smoking aid that works by binding to nicotine receptors in the brain. This blocks the pleasurable effects of nicotine while easing withdrawal symptoms, making it easier to quit smoking for good.
How Varenicline Works
Varenicline is a partial nicotine receptor agonist.
It:
- Mimics the effects of nicotine to reduce cravings
- Blocks nicotine from activating reward pathways if you smoke
- Helps reduce relapse by controlling withdrawal symptoms and satisfaction from smoking
Understanding the Condition
What is nicotine addiction?
Nicotine addiction occurs when repeated tobacco use causes physical dependence and behavioral habits. Withdrawal can include irritability, anxiety, strong cravings, and difficulty concentrating. Varenicline addresses both physical and psychological aspects of quitting.
