Vitamin K exists in three forms: K1, K2 and K3. Vitamin K1 (phylloquinone) is the form obtained directly from food and is found abundantly in leafy green vegetables such as kale, spinach, broccoli and Brussels sprouts. Its name reflects this origin — phyllo meaning “leaf” in Greek.
Vitamin K1 contributes to normal blood clotting and plays a key role in the synthesis of clotting proteins in the liver. Because it supports coagulation, it influences how easily we may bruise or bleed. Within the body, vitamin K1 can also be converted into vitamin K2 by beneficial bacteria in the gut microbiome.
